Gambling Debt Help in the UK: Free Advice and Your Options
If you’re dealing with gambling debt in the UK, there’s free, confidential help and a clear set of options — including legal breathing space from creditors. Here’s where to start.
Free debt advice comes first — and it’s genuinely free
The single most important thing to know about gambling debt in the UK is that excellent, completely free debt advice exists — and you should never pay a company for help you can get for nothing. Charities like StepChange, National Debtline, and Citizens Advice give free, confidential, non-judgemental advice and can set up solutions on your behalf. The government-backed MoneyHelper can point you to the right one. Be wary of firms that charge fees to “manage” your debt — the charities do the same work for free.
Get the gambling under control at the same time
Clearing the debt only lasts if the gambling stops. In the UK you can register with GAMSTOP, the free national self-exclusion scheme that blocks you from all gambling websites and apps licensed in Great Britain. Pair it with a blocking app such as Gamban and your bank’s gambling block (most UK banks now offer one). For support, the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, run by GamCare, is free and open 24/7, and GambleAware and Gordon Moody offer further help.
Breathing Space: legal protection from creditors
England and Wales have a scheme many people don’t know about: the Debt Respite Scheme, or Breathing Space. It gives you legal protection from most creditor action — pausing interest, fees, and enforcement — for up to 60 days while you get advice and a plan. There’s also a Mental Health Crisis Breathing Space for people receiving crisis mental-health treatment, which lasts as long as the treatment does. You apply through a debt adviser (such as the charities above), which is one more reason to make that free call early. (Scotland has its own equivalent in the Debt Arrangement Scheme.)
UK debt solutions, in plain terms
If you can’t simply repay over time, the UK has several formal routes — and a free adviser will tell you which, if any, fits your situation:
- Debt Management Plan (DMP) — an informal arrangement, often run free by a charity, combining what you owe into one affordable monthly payment.
- Debt Relief Order (DRO) — for people with relatively low debt, little spare income, and few assets; it can write off qualifying debt after a period.
- Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) — a formal, legally binding agreement to pay what you can over a set period, with the remainder written off.
- Bankruptcy — a legal route that can clear most debts; serious, but for some the cleanest fresh start.
Each has eligibility rules and trade-offs (including effects on your credit file), which is exactly what a free adviser is there to explain. Don’t choose one from a sales call — get impartial advice first.
Know which debts matter most
Not all debts are equal in the UK. Priority debts — rent or mortgage, council tax, energy bills, court fines — carry the most serious consequences if unpaid (losing your home, bailiffs, disconnection), so they come first. Non-priority debts like credit cards, overdrafts, and personal loans are still real, but missing one won’t cost you your home this month. A debt adviser will help you sort yours and tackle them in the right order.
Your rights with creditors
UK lenders and collectors are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and must treat customers in difficulty fairly, including those who are vulnerable. They can’t harass you. If you tell a creditor you’re getting debt advice, many will pause action to give you time. You don’t have to face the calls without support — a free adviser can even deal with creditors on your behalf.
What to do today
Make one free call — to StepChange or National Debtline — and ask them to review your situation. It costs nothing and opens up Breathing Space and the right solution for you. If gambling is still active, register with GAMSTOP today as well. For organising what you owe before that call, the general gambling debt guide and the UK page are good companions.
